JOHN SCOTT - Owner & Funeral Celebrant

  • AFDA Victorian President (2000-2002)
  • AFDA National President (2009-2011)
  • Awarded Master Funeral Director (AFDA)
  • AFDA Life Member and Life Councillor
  • FIAT-IFTA Board member (2011-2013)  (The World Organisation of Funeral Operatives)

John is the owner and sole director of T J Scott & Son and has been working in the family business for 60 years. John is dedicated to continuing the traditions started by his grandfather, the founder, Thomas J Scott, and has been innovative and always encouraged an environment of learning and growing so that we continue to offer what our local families need. He is still actively involved in the family business and is a much-loved celebrant in the community. His role in helping families put together a service is very personal and collaborative.

Throughout his career John has been heavily involved with the AFDA at every level. He has always been an active member, serving as a state councillor for over 30 years and National Council for 20 years, leading the association as both a State and National President. John has served the AFDA with distinction and was appointed to the World Board (FIAT-IFTA) in Chicago in 2011 and was only the fourth recipient of an esteemed Master Funeral Director Award.

T J Scott & Son would not be where it is today without Johns knowledge of the industry and the understanding of the community he serves. He has built on a very small business with just him and his father to a thriving business employing over a dozen staff, with three locations. He is well respected in his region not just as a funeral director but as someone who has contributed above and beyond to the community in which he lives.

PETA WESTON

Administration Co-ordinator

Peta is our administration guru who is the glue of the team! Peta will often be the first person you speak with when calling T J Scott and Son – her experience and knowledge are reassuring when you need support and guidance. Peta loves long walks, her grandchildren and her friends. In Peta’s words: “ What it means to me to be working in a local family business is that it connects me to the community I have lived in for 18 years. I feel happy working within a small and friendly team. I love to support our families at a difficult time in their lives. Grief can be overwhelming and if we can alleviate that just a little, then we have achieved something positive”.

KYLIE HAND

Funeral Assistant

We would be lost without Kylie’s meticulous approach to everything she does! Her care when meeting with families makes such a difference, especially in the sensitive way she looks after the transfer of a loved one into our care. For Kylie “working for a local family business is an absolute honour and privilege. I first contacted John Scott as 16 year-old looking for a work experience placement with an interest in the Funeral Industry. I then returned many years later and have certainly seen changes in the industry change and how T J Scott & Son have grown. I have also had opportunities to grow in the role I have within the business, especially over the past 6 years. Being a local and growing up in Kyneton, I know a lot of families we look after, so for me it’s an honour to look after their loved ones during their time of need. I really enjoy working in my community”.

KELLY CLUNE

Funeral Director & Preplanning Coordinator

Kelly’s gentle and caring manner has helped so many families in the several years she has worked with us at T J Scott and Son. Always willing to meet every wish a family may have, Kelly is understanding and thoughtful in her approach to the planning of a farewell. In Kelly’s words: “I find it very rewarding to be able to do meaningful work within our local community. I love making connections with people, helping them through one of their most difficult times, and the satisfaction that comes from bringing everything together to create a special farewell. Outside of work I enjoy singing, sewing and going for walks.”

DIANNE FLYNN

Funeral Assistant and Preplanning Specialist

Dianne wears many hats here at T J Scott and Son, she is a gem! Being so capable and willing to help our families, Dianne supports us in Administration, with Funeral Services, Preplanning and is part of our wonderful Mortuary Care team. Dianne says: “Living in Kilmore I believe an important part of my work is to look after the families in our local Kilmore Community. I have worked in the funeral industry for 15 years and in that time I have found working for small family run funeral businesses very rewarding. The family and staff at T J Scott and Son are a great example of the caring professionalism that comes from knowing the people in our community.”

JENNY STRAWHORN

Funeral Director

Taking time and adding those personal touches is Jenny’s focus when she is supporting the families she looks after. Jenny says “In my role with TJ Scott and Son I support our beautiful families along with our amazing team!! Families are dealing with grief after losing their loved one, so we try to make things as easy as possible and lighten the load. We receive amazing feedback from our beautiful families about our service and care being second to none. This speaks volumes about a small family business, especially because it is so personalised. I am lucky enough to live on a beautiful farm with my gorgeous family. I’m very passionate about our environment, I love cooking, gardening and spending precious time with family and friends”

BRIAN FLYNN

Funeral Director

Brian brings a wealth of experience to his role as a Funeral Director with T J Scott and Son. His quiet, gentle approach helps make people feel comfortable at such a difficult time. He is also our go-to information finder when we need something researched and is a great support to our newer team members. In Brian’s words: “Working in a local, long established family business means we are able to get to know local families and assist them at their time of need with a much more personal approach. Something that would not be possible in a larger corporate funeral company environment. My other interests include gardening and landscaping, vintage cars and machinery”.

ALIRA CHARLES

Funeral Arranger and Mortuary Care

Alira is a very welcome addition to our team in 2022. Alira brings with her years of caring experience both as a registered nurse and as a Social and Emotional Wellbeing Worker. Alira’s warmth together with her gentle and sensitive approach will be a wonderful support to the families we serve. Alira became interested in working in the Funeral Industry after experiencing the loss of her Dad when she was 15. When the opportunity to work at TJ Scott and Son presented itself, and after meeting the team, Alira knew that she wanted to be part of this special family business. In Alira’s words: “I am humbled to assist people through this challenging time of life, and am honoured to care for loved ones and their families”. Alira is a Mum to four gorgeous children and when she is not at work you’ll find her in the great outdoors, camping, 4-wheel driving, and exploring our local hidden treasures.

MATTHEW BILES

Funeral Arranger

Matthew’s passion for helping families comes from his previous roles in the health care sector and he brings this dedication and enthusiasm to our team here at T J Scott and Son. Matthew explains: “After almost ten years as a nurse, I decided it was time for a change, I wanted to provide care and support to families and loved ones in an environment where it wasn’t pressured or rushed. I carefully chose to join the family at T.J Scott and Son due to the passion for and commitment to the service they provide families and loved ones during a difficult time. I now get to meet wonderfully unique people and help them feel supported as they make an individualised farewell what they and their loved one want most. Outside of work, I’m kept busy by Dad life and I enjoy spending time with my extended family and working in my garden, and I also volunteer as a firefighter with the CFA.”

Planning Ahead

Planning ahead makes sense. It’s a way of thinking about your life and providing an opportunity for the people in your life to know what’s
important to you.

TJ Scott & Son is a family business with over 75 years experience helping other families through funeral planning.

Many people find it helpful to think about funeral arrangements like other planned life activities, such as selling your home or retirement. Just like those financial and emotional decisions, there is no ‘one size fits all’ option. You have to think about what’s important for you and for your family.
